City of Los Angeles to Kick Off 2013 Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Heritage Month, Light City Hall Lavender in Honor of LGBT Equality

Mayor and City Council to host Opening Ceremony, award presentation at City Hall, and City Hall will be bathed in lavender lights for the month of June.

Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa will kick off Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) Heritage Month with opening ceremonies on the South Lawn of City Hall at 200 N. Spring St., Los Angeles, CA 90012 on Thursday, May 30, 2013 from 6 to 9 p.m. The evening will also mark the start of a month-long lighting of the historic building in lavender in support of LGBT equality. The following day, Mayor Villaraigosa and city council will conduct their annual presentation of the Hope, Dream and Spirit of Los Angeles Awards to honorees openly gay recording artist Adam Lambert , community activist Mia Yamamoto , and president ofChristopher Street West/PRIDE Rodney Scott , on Friday, May 31, 2013 at 10 a.m. in city hall’s Council Chambers , 200 N. Spring Street, Los Angeles, CA 90012.
This will mark the third annual LGBT Heritage Month in the City of Los Angeles and the second year the City has bathed City Hall in lavender lights.
LGBT Heritage Month is a month-long series of events taking place City-wide. A list of scheduled events can be obtained at http://www.culturela.org .
Thursday’s kick-off celebration will include entertainment by Doug Spearman , the Gay Men's Chorus of Los Angeles, Katrina Parker of The Voice, and many others.
During Friday’s Council Chamber presentation, Mayor Villaraigosa will join the City Council to present the Hope, Dream and Spirit of Los Angeles Awards to the LGBT Heritage Month honorees and announce the winners of the LGBT Heritage Month Youth Creative Writing/Video Contest.
